Title: PHYLOGENETIC POSITION AND TAXONOMY OF KUSAGHIPORIA USAMBARAE GEN. ET SP. NOV. (POLYPORALES)
A large poroid fungus from the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania producing dark brown, up to 60-cm large fruiting bodies that at maturity may weigh more than 10 kg, was described as a new species in a new genus. Phylogenetic analyses based on individual and concatenated data sets of nrLSU, nrSSU, RPB2 and TEF1 genes were used to infer its phylogeny. The phylogeny of Polyporales was inferred from four datasets: 36 nrLSU sequences, 25 nrSSU sequences, 26 RPB2 sequences and 22 TEF1 sequences. A total of 209 sequences were analyses that represented 201 species of Polyporales, with two russuloids as out-group. Analysis in this study confirmed seven clades in Polyporales earlier described as: the ‘core polyporoid clade’; the ‘residual polyporoid clade’; the ‘antrodia clade’; the ‘gelatoporia clade’; the ‘phlebioid clade’; the ‘tyromyces clade’ and the ‘fragiliporia clade’. Similar findings have been reported in other studies of Binder et al. (2013) and Zhao et al. (2015). In all analyses Kusaghiporia was found to be nested within the ‘antrodia clade’, together with Laetiporus, Phaeolus, Pycnoporellus and Wolfiporia, forming a monophyletic group. Based on morphological features and molecular data it was described as Kusaghiporia usambarensis.
